AI Is Moving Faster Than Humans. That's Not the Problem.

I keep having the same conversation. A capable, senior person — someone who's led system rollouts, navigated digital transformations, adopted every wave of new tools without breaking stride — will say some version of this: I know I should be using AI more. I just can't figure out where it fits.

It's not one person. It's a pattern. And the usual organizational response — more training sessions, more prompt guides, more cheerful reminders to experiment — isn't solving it.

The reason it isn't solving it is simple, and almost nobody is saying it plainly: AI is advancing faster than humans can reasonably absorb it. Not because people aren't smart enough. Because that's not how people work.

Technology compounds. People don't.

Every few weeks there's a new model, a new capability, a new reason you're supposedly behind. The release cycle doesn't pause so your team can catch up. It doesn't care that Q2 planning just started or that half your department is still figuring out the last tool you rolled out.

People change how they work through repetition, observation, and small experiments. They watch a colleague try something. They test it themselves. They sit with it. They gradually figure out what actually helps versus what just looks impressive. That's not a slow process — it's a human process. It's how every technology has ever been absorbed, from spreadsheets to smartphones.

The difference with AI is that the tool keeps changing while people are still learning the last version of it. It's like trying to learn to drive while someone keeps redesigning the car.

The tension this creates is real — and predictable.

Leaders see powerful new capabilities and, understandably, want their teams using them now. They read the same headlines. They hear the same urgency from boards and investors. The instinct to push is rational.

Meanwhile, employees are trying to figure out where these tools belong in their actual workflow — not the theoretical workflow from the training session, but the one with 47 unread emails and a deliverable due Thursday. They're not resisting. They're prioritizing.

Neither side is wrong. But they're operating on different clocks, and most organizations haven't acknowledged that mismatch. Instead, they treat it as a motivation problem. Roll out another workshop. Send another Slack reminder. Wonder why adoption numbers are flat.

What the gap actually costs

When organizations ignore the pace mismatch, a few things happen quietly.

The people who are naturally curious start experimenting on their own — which is great, except they're doing it without guidance, without shared standards, and without anyone learning from what they figure out. The knowledge stays siloed.

The people who are more cautious disengage entirely. Not because they've decided AI isn't valuable, but because the pressure to adopt without clear direction feels like being set up to fail. So they wait. And the longer they wait, the wider the gap gets.

And leadership, watching the uneven adoption from above, often draws the wrong conclusion: that they have a people problem. They don't. They have a pace problem.

The uncomfortable truth

There is no version of this where human adoption keeps up with the technology. That's not a temporary condition. It's the permanent reality of working with AI.

The question isn't how to make people faster. It's how to build an organization that's honest about the gap and deliberate about closing it — incrementally, with real support, tied to real work.

That means accepting that adoption will be uneven. That some people will move quickly and others won't, and that both responses are reasonable. That the goal isn't everyone using AI by next quarter — it's building the kind of environment where people develop genuine competence over time.

The organizations that benefit most from AI won't be the ones that moved fastest. They'll be the ones that were honest about how fast humans can actually move — and built their strategy around that reality instead of against it.

The gap between the technology and the people isn't the problem. Pretending it doesn't exist is.
